Bird Flu confirmed in Dorset

On 10th January 2008, Defra confirmed Avian Influenza in three dead wild mute swans in the Chesil Beach area in Dorset. A 3km Control Area and a 10 km Monitoring Area has been established around the location, encompassing Chesil Beach and Portland Bill.

There are currently eight FMD confirmed infected premises in Surrey. Evidence suggests that the outbreak to date has been confined to a relatively small area of the country. All cases from 21st September have derived from other infected premises in the Protection Zone and the risk of spread outside of this area remains very low.

Foot and Mouth Disease confirmed

Foot and Mouth Disease has today been confirmed at the slaughter house where sheep, pigs and cattle were culled last night. This now becomes the fifth infected premises since 3 August this year but remains contained within the Surrey region. The farm is within the existing Protection Zone near to the Infected Premises confirmed last week.

The "precautionary" cull of animals had taken place at Stroude Farm, Egham, near the scene of the outbreak of the disease discovered on Wednesday. Footpaths within the protection zone remain closed.
