Gideon Quarries

Llanberis Slate

Encompassing The Mancer, Film Set, The Land That God Forgot and Gideon Quarries. Home of the first slate route - a bit of a backwater now but still contains a number of worthwhile routes.

Crag information
Climbing Area: Wales Rock Type: Slate
County Gwynedd Access Status: Restrictions/ Sensitive Access
Importance: Regional CRoW Land: No

There have been serious problems here in the past but access is now less problematic providing climbers keep a low profile. The quarries are owned by Gwynedd Council who offically do not allow access due to public safety reasons - there are high fences and signs prohibiting access, but there have not been any reports of access problems for many years.

Restrictions apply from 1 March - 30 June.

Reason: Nesting Birds

2017 - Due to nesting Choughs (these species have legal protection under the Wildlife & Countryside Act),  climbing in the Gideon Quarry (all routes on the Gideon Terrace area - including the Cracking Up routes ) is restricted from March 1st until the end of June.

The routes on the Bone People wall and on the main Gideon slab are not affected by this restrction in 2017.
