White Stone

South Lakes Limestone

This is the prominent crag above the A590 between High Newton and Newby Bridge. A reasonable selection of single pitch routes up to about 20m in length on clean, fast drying Silurian slate (actually Siltstone).

Warning: Whitestone Allotment is known locally as being very bad for ticks. Take care with leaving clothing on the ground or even lounging around.

Parking and Approach

Now the Newton by pass is built, there is no lay-by opposite. There is a convenient stretch of former road on the NE (crag) side of road accessed from the Staveley-in-Cartmel road about 200m NW of the end of the dual carriageway. Incidentally, the correct name for the crag is Whitestone not Whitestones.
Area information

With implimentation of the CRoW Act (2000), many Lakes fells and crags now have an Open Access designation. They also have many nationally important bird and plant species dependant on inaccessible crags/ledges and heather/mixed heath environments for survival. During the bird nesting period, a number of species can be vulnerable to disturbance. The Lake District restrictions are monitored, variable (VR) and reviewed in April/May. If the birds do not nest, restrictions are lifted early. Check the BMC and FRCC websites in early May for details. New restrictions will be notified on the websites and with on-site notices.
