Rothay Bridge Crag

Eastern Crags

A broken crag up to 20m high and around 100m wide. Situated in woodland. There are several other smaller buttresses, quarried faces and boulders dotted around the main buttress. The two bouldering areas are of reasonable quality, but the only traditional route worth doing is 'Crack in the Woods'.

Note: 'The Rothay Roof' boulder can be found slightly down the hill of and 50 meters to the right of the main buttress.Note: The difficult to find Crystal Zone can be located 100-150 meters left of the main crag, past both the wall and the fallen rusting radio mast to level with the farmhouse.

Parking and Approach

Just a 5-10 minute walk from Ambleside!Leave Ambleside along the A593 and take the first right after crossing the bridge over Rydal Beck. Follow this road until a gated field can be found on the left. The crag lies hidden within the woods on the other side. May require a little aimless wondering within the woods if it is your first time visiting.
Area information

With implimentation of the CRoW Act (2000), many Lakes fells and crags now have an Open Access designation. They also have many nationally important bird and plant species dependant on inaccessible crags/ledges and heather/mixed heath environments for survival. During the bird nesting period, a number of species can be vulnerable to disturbance. The Lake District restrictions are monitored, variable (VR) and reviewed in April/May. If the birds do not nest, restrictions are lifted early. Check the BMC and FRCC websites in early May for details. New restrictions will be notified on the websites and with on-site notices.
