The final of the Youth Climbing Series 2017 took place on Saturday 29 April 2017 at Edinburgh Indoor Climbing Arena.
Over 260 young competitors who had trained hard and climbed well to make the top three places in the regional rounds that were held in 9 different regions across the UK and Ireland made the journey to Edinburgh for Youth Climbing Series Final.
Each competitor had three routes and three boulder problems to do, just like in the regional rounds, but this being the final, the routesetters had ramped the difficulty up a couple of notches. All the competitors thoroughly enjoyed being challenged by the hard routes and problems.
There were some fantastic performances over the course of the day and each climber tried their best, but in the end we crowned Youth Climbing Series champions in each of the ten age categories. The route setters had done a great job and for the first time in a long time the event finished on time and their were no superfinals! There were lots of proud parents, coaches and spectators as the podium place competitors were called out.
Results of all categories can be found here.
The BMC, Mountaineering Scotland and Mountaineering Ireland would like to thank the Area Youth Coordinators who organise and run the regional rounds and all of the 70+ volunteer belayers, judges and chaperones without which none of the Youth Climbing Series would be possible.
The BMC would especially like to thank Tina Heselden, Claudia Heselden, Paul Russell, Juan Avendano and Lisa Farris who are all stepping down as long serving AYC's this year for all their hard work in organising the regional rounds over the years.
The BMC would also like to thank the staff at EICA, Ratho for helping to host such a great event, to DMM for providing the prizes for the final and Mammut for supplying the ropes used in the final.
The next day the AYC's met to discuss what went well in 2017 and how the series could be improved for 2018, so watch this space for information in the near future.
