With a number of our young GB Climbing athletes getting through to finals in the Lead event at the Youth World Championships in Arco, we can safely say everyone is off to a great start! Zoe Spriggins, BMC competitions programme manager, is in the thick of the action in Arco with all the details:

The team of young GB Climbing athletes arrived in Arco to hot and sweaty conditions at the Youth World Championships but an amazing looking climbing wall. It was going to be exciting watching all our GB athletes compete on this global stage.

Qualification

Youth B males and females and Junior males qualification took place first. Strong performances from Joe and Toby saw them both qualify for the semi finals. Alfie also put in a great performance finishing 32nd overall, fantastic effort considering this is his first youth world champs.

Kieran tackled a steep route up the centre of the impressive wall to secure his place in the Junior semi finals in 18th position.

In Youth A and Junior females, great performances from Thea and Zoe saw them both through to semi finals in 20th and 23rd respectively. Emily put in strong performances on both of her Youth A qualification routes to see her through to the semi finals in 17th.

Meanwhile in Youth A males, Finley battled up a steep sustained route up the central wall to finish 29th overall, narrowly missing out on qualification for the semi finals. Daniel climbed well on both his routes, despite having to cope with the hot and sweaty conditions of the afternoon and finished 31st overall. Hamish climbed superbly, getting onto the head wall of the steep sustained routes and secured his place in the semi finals in 6th.

Semi Finals

Youth B and Junior males were up first. Kieran climbed well on a long, technical route and finished 12th overall, just outside of a spot in the finals. Toby had a stunning performance and claimed the first high point on his semi final which was enough to see him qualify for the finals in 7th. Joe also put in a great performance and finished 12th overall. Great performances for Youth B females, saw Gwen through to semi finals in 7th place, whilst Lousie and Matilda finished in 41st and 56th respectively.

Gwen climbed a long blue route with some large open handed slopers, she made it through this section and secured her place in the final in 8th.

Youth A and Junior Female semi final took place on Sunday with Hamish, Emily, Thea and Zoe all competing.

Hamish climbed well in the hot and sweaty conditions the midday sun provided. He finished 6th overall and made it through to the finals.

Emily tackled a particularly lumpy section of big open handed slopers to make her way through to the finals in 7th place.

In Junior female both Zoe and Thea tackled a hard route up the right hand arête with some difficult dynamic moves. Both climbed well finishing in 20th place for Zoe and 17th place for Thea.

Finals

Toby and Gwen put in excellent performances on some steep and technical routes. They both managed to improve their position from the semi finals finishing in 6th position for Toby and 6th position for Gwen.

Hamish and Emily gave it their all in the finals on some long sustained routes. Hamish finished 5th and Emily finished in 4th just one spot off the podium!

Fantastic efforts on the lead all round. The Bouldering starts next so it will be exciting to see what happens in this discipline. Stay up to date with all the action by following GB Climbing on Instagram.
