The 2017 IFSC World Youth Championships started today and with 1172 athletes competing it will be the worlds biggest climbing competition and is being held on the worlds biggest climbing wall in the brand new climbing centre in Innsbruck. A 24 strong team from GB Climbing are taking part.
The IFSC Youth World Championships take place every year and gather hundreds of the most elite sport climbing athletes between the ages of 14 and 19. This year, there are 1,172 athlete registrations across all categories - representing 50 countries and 5 continents – and climbing will take place for 12 days on the brand-new walls of Kletterzentrum Innsbruck.

This year, the Combined results will be the focus. In addition to medals in Bouldering, Lead and Speed, 20 female and 20 male Youth A athletes, and 6 female and 6 male Youth B and Juniors athletes, will compete in the Combined on the last weekend. Sunday will also serve as the major qualification event for Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018, with 13 female and 13 male Youth A athletes to be recommended for selection.
GB Climbing are fielding a very strong team of 24 athletes most of which are entering all three disicplines of the event and the combined, including some strong Youth A athletes who are aiming to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games. The full GB squad can be seen below.

The GB Climbing Team is supported by the BMC, Mountaineering Scotland, Berghaus, and Rock Over Climbing, and the GB Paraclimbing Team is supported by Oakwood Climbing Centre and Quay Climbing Centre. Many UK walls also support the British Climbing Team through free or subsidised entry.
