The Winter Mountain Leader award provides training and assessment in the skills and techniques to lead walking parties in winter conditions, excluding roped climbing on technical terrain.

The skills and techniques of the summer Mountain Leader award are built upon, which must be gained before progressing onto the winter scheme.

Mountain Leader Training England has produced a DVD showcasing the eight leadership and instructional awards available in the UK.The film provides an insight into the Winter Mountain Leader award.

The scheme is administered by Mountain Leader Training Scotland, and the Winter ML prospectus and syllabus lays out the award in greater detail.
