Volunteers Week 2021: Volunteers needed for volunteering support group

Posted by Jane Thompson on 03/06/2021

We are establishing a new steering group to support the completion and delivery of the BMC Volunteering Strategy. If you would like to volunteer some time to support other volunteers then please read on.

Volunteers are essential to the BMC, and to ensure that we can best support them in the future we are looking for a small group of volunteers to work with us to finalise our Volunteering Strategy and to support the delivery of key aspects of the Strategy during 2021.

We are keen to have representation from a range of volunteers on the group so whether you are a member of a committee, lead local-area walks, attend crag clean-ups, or help at local competitions we would be keen to have you on board. We are keen to include our long-standing volunteers however would also be delighted to have some members on the group who have not been volunteering for very long or even those who are considering volunteering with the BMC but haven’t started yet.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been involved in strategy work before as ideas and enthusiasm will be more important at this stage!

Specific areas that the group will work on will include:

  • Reward & recognition of volunteers
  • Recruiting new volunteers
  • Supporting existing volunteers
  • Training, induction & development
  • Working across BMC specialisms

We will be utilising online technology for communications, including Zoom meetings, emails and Teamwork.  Don’t worry if you haven’t used all these before – a willingness to use them is what we are looking for.

The long-term future of the group is not yet confirmed, so we are initially looking for volunteers who could commit to being on the group from June through to the end of this year.  It is expected that we will have Zoom meetings every few weeks for the first couple of months and then monthly meetings until the Strategy and accompanying action plan is complete.  At this point meetings will take place every 2-3 months.  The Zoom meetings will either be day-time or evening to suit availability of the members of the group.

Interested?

If you are interested in joining us please email volunteering@thebmc.co.uk with your name, preferred contact details, a short description of your volunteering experience and details or relevant professional experience by Monday 21 June and we’ll get back in touch with you by the end of June.

If you have any questions please contact Jane Thompson (BMC Clubs, Huts & Volunteers Officer) on 07885 910606 or volunteering@thebmc.co.uk
