This weekend workshop on 18 & 19 May at Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Centre in Snowdonia, is for club members wishing to learn more about introducing new club members to climbing and walking.
Welcoming novices and then guiding them through an apprenticeship has always been a mainstay of walking and climbing clubs. The BMC has been delivering this subsidised workshop since 2011, to provide support to club members interested in developing their own outdoor teaching skills. For the fully inclusive price of £50, the weekend will be a mixture of theory and practical sessions with an emphasis on the latter.
The theory sessions will consider ways to structure an outdoor introductory session for novices unfamiliar with the outdoors, with the practicals then putting this into practice. Led by Plas y Brenin staff, you will learn current good practice on ways to introduce novices to climbing and walking. There will be a choice of activities to focus on.
The BMC Civil Liability insurance provides cover to all BMC members when introducing novices to walking and climbing in a non-professional manner. A number of club case studies and the legal aspects of informal instruction will also be included during the weekend.
