Don't miss: the Tommy Caldwell tour

Posted by Peter Burnside on 08/05/2017

Last year, we brought you Alex Honnold. Now we’ve teamed up with Penguin Live to bring you another American rock star. This July, climbing legend Tommy Caldwell is coming to Sheffield and London.

BUY: Sheffield tickets for 1 July

BUY: London tickets for 2 July

That’s right, we’re teaming up with Penguin Live to bring you Tommy Caldwell, the man that freed El Capitan’s Dawn Wall and raced along Patagonia's Fitzroy Traverse with Alex Honnold.

Who is Tommy Caldwell?

A badass rock climber, that’s who. In 2015, after years of effort, Tommy Caldwell finally conquered the Dawn Wall, the forbidding 3,000-foot-high southwest face of El Capitan, in California's Yosemite Valley. This astonishing ascent – hailed as ‘the hardest climb of all time’ – was achieved thanks to Tommy’s immense reserves of determination and ambition to see it through.

And, even more, was not the first time Tommy's unending grit saw him through moments of incredible survival. The Dawn Wall was a climb that represented the end of a difficult recovery from the trauma of being held hostage by rebels during an earlier climbing expedition in Kyrgyzstan. Tommy’s insurmountable courage saw him able to withstand being captured by violent extremists at gunpoint and escape their clutches to return home.

Tommy last came to the UK two years ago when his talk was one of the highlights of Kendal Mountain Festival, so don't miss this rare chance to hear him speak.

When and where?

There are only two dates for this tour. Tommy will be at Sheffield City Hall Ballroom on Saturday 1 July and the RGS, London on Sunday 2 July.

What's on?

The one and only Niall Grimes will be the compere for the evening. He'll be introducing Tommy, warming up the crowd and hosting a Q&A session with Tommy after his talk.

Congratulated by President Obama for a feat he had previously been told he had no hope of achieving, don’t miss your chance to pose your question during the audience Q&A and hear directly from the man who made history by achieving the ‘impossible’.

Tommy will also be signing and dedicating books after the event so stick around after the talk to meet him in person. All books will be available for collection on the night from the on-site bookshop.

And, of course, we'll be there with a stand full of goodies and t-shirts, so come and say hello and find out more about the BMC.

Tickets and prices

Thanks to Penguin Live, BMC members had exclusive access to an early bird ticket offer until 15 May. Tickets are now on general release.

The Sheffield venue has allocated seating. The RGS is unreserved seating, but the first two rows will be reserved for BMC members.

With such a climbing legend, we’re expecting tickets to sell out quick so get in early.

This event looks great. However if you want more than 2 tickets for a family, the only option seems to be to pay out for 2 books. I would like 3 tickets but only 1 book in Sheffield. Is there an option to do this?

We will check with Penguin Live and see if there is an option.

I'm a BMC member but my partner isn't. Can I use my BMC membership to buy a pair of tickets or will she be required to show BMC membership along with her ticket on the door?

Hi. Thanks for the ticketing questions. The tickets are being sold by the venues, not the BMC.

1. Unfortunately there is no option for family booking at this time, so you have to buy combinations of the one or two ticket options.

2. Your BMC code is required to unlock the tickets, but you can buy tickets for non-members. Seating for Sheffield is allocated. RGS is unallocated with the first two rows for BMC members only, so you would need to show your membership card to sit in these two rows.

I'm a BMC member but haven't received any BMC code? How or when are you sending them out?
12/05/2017
I didn't receive a code by email how can I get one? I am a member! :D

Cheers

Hi everyone

The tickets are now on general release, so there's no need to use the members' booking code. See you all there.
