The Time Is Now is a mass lobby for climate, nature and people taking place on Wednesday 26 June, filling the streets of Westminster, to tell our MPs that the time is now to take action for our climate and the environment.
This lobby is unique in bringing together The Climate Coalition (of which the BMC is a member) and the Greener UK coalition. The rally will be attended by the young, old, climbers, surfers, walkers, cyclists, scientists, bird watchers, doctors and everyone in between to show Government that action is needed now.
We are the first and last generation to know we are destroying the world and we need to work together to get our politicians to go further and faster to protect our planet. We need ambitious laws that create a healthier environment for nature and people to be passed as soon as possible. The mass lobby will therefore demonstrate clearly to Government that it’s time to set the foundations for a brighter, greener and more secure world: #thetimeisnow
Changes in rainfall, melting permafrost and extreme weather are endangering the survival of mountain people and wildlife, and affecting Alpine climbing, European ski touring, and even the state of our limestone crags. The BMC is therefore asking for its members to attend the lobby on Wednesday 26 June and if possible, to wear climbing / ice climbing gear to clearly highlight how our sport is and will continue to be affected by climate change. Together we can call for stronger laws that secure the future of our much-loved landscapes.

The UK Climate Change Act was the first of its kind in the world. It required the UK to cut its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. But 10 years have passed and now it’s out of date. It’s time to up our ambition, create a ‘net zero’ target and bring in new laws to tackle other environmental threats like plastic pollution and dirty air / disappearing wildlife.
More information on the day’s events can be found here.
As well as continuing to urge its members and the wider sporting community to really think about and engage in more concrete measures to reduce our own impact and to attend this lobby, the BMC is also in the process of developing a clear statement on climate change, declaring an emergency. In addition, the BMC will be offering its members the opportunity to support a climate change project in the UK and abroad at the point of purchasing travel insurance and the BMC office will be carbon neutral by the end of the year.
