UK’s first deep-water solo competition wall unveiled - now with online entry

Posted by Rob Adie on 17/04/2014

The Quay and Entre-Prises UK have revealed the design for a new deep-water solo competition wall that will host a competition in Exeter's canal basin on 30 - 31 August.

The wall will be 12 metres wide by 7 metres tall and overhangs by 3 metres. It will feature routes graded from V1 to V14 which will challenge the very best climbers.

The wall will sit within the city’s canal basin and allow for up to 3 competitors to participate simultaneously in timed rounds – adding to the excitement for the audience in the piazza.

The event will take place on the 30 and 31 August 2014 and will be staged in Exeter’s canal basin. The basin is situated right next to The Quay Climbing Centre – a unique location in the UK with water space so close to an indoor climbing facility. Qualifying rounds will take place throughout the day on the Saturday with semi‐finals and finals held on the Sunday.

Over 30 of the UK’s leading climbers have been invited to take part with all the major sponsors fielding teams including DMM, La Sportiva, Evolv, 5.10 and, of course, Entre‐Prises UK. Registration for the competition will open in early April – with spaces for over 150 open entrants from climbers aged 12+.

On hearing of the event, one of the UK’s top climbers, Gavin Symonds said "I've been Deep Water Soloing for the best part of 15 years now and it is the main part of my climbing year. All training leads to the summer, sun and sea. To have an inland Deep Water Solo Climbing Competition running in the UK is really exciting. I can’t wait, and will be helping to make it a fantastic event for both climbers and spectators."

The event is being run by The Quay Climbing Centre Exeter, with lead sponsors Entre‐Prises UK. Lead sponsors will include major industry names such as DMM and Lyon Outdoors.
