The grass isn’t greener for everyone: why access to green space matters

Posted by Emma Travers on 17/09/2020

The Ramblers have launched new research outlining how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our attitude to nature and walking. Their new campaign has been created to ensure that everyone, everywhere has good access to high quality green space.

The report, 'The grass isn’t greener for everyone: why access to green space matters,' highlights that access to nature-filled green space is unequal and makes the case for urgent action to bring the benefits of walking in nature to everyone.

Their research found that people are planning to walk more, and more people now appreciate green spaces. However, it also shows that people on a low income and those who identify as being from a BAME background are less likely to have access to their own garden, and are less likely to have green spaces within a five minute walk of their home.

Campaign Action

Everyone, everywhere should have easy access to high quality green space close to where they live, but the latest report from The Ramblers shows that the country needs urgent action to achieve this.

The Environment Bill gives us an opportunity to ensure that we can all can walk in nature-filled green spaces. We are supporting the green space matters campaign and encouraging our members to ask their MP to support the call for the Bill to include a requirement for a national target that guarantees nobody lives more than a five minute walk from green space.

Who are The Ramblers?

The Ramblers is a charity whose goal is to protect the ability of people to enjoy the sense of freedom and benefits that come from being outdoors on foot.

They’re an association of people and groups who come together to both enjoy walking and other outdoor pursuits and also to ensure that they protect and expand the infrastructure and places people go walking.
