We’ve raised over £80,000 in the last five weeks, and with donations surging we are getting closer to our big target of £150,000. But there’s less than four days left. Why should you donate to Mend Our Mountains? Let’s find out.
If you haven't donated, now is your final opportunity. There are still loads of amazing rewards available when you donate, from DMM ice axes and Vango tents, to helicopter rides, glamping holidays and days out with Britain's best climbers. Pledge today, and help us protect our mountains tomorrow.
Getting up to £150,000 will help us to support remote and expensive mountain conservation work in places like the Cairngorms, Lake District and Snowdonia. Left unchecked, erosion will continue to ruin places we treasure.
Thank you so much if you have donated already. Please can you share this message with friends and family, and let them know how important this cause is?
Support
The appeal has been featured in the national press, including The Times and The Guardian, and the likes of Britain's most legendary mountaineer, Sir Chris Bonington, and the award-winning author Robert Macfarlane, have spoken up about how we can all help look after our National Parks by donating to Mend Our Mountains.
Sir Chris said: “As I look back at a long and eventful lifetime of climbing which has taken me all over the world, the importance and uniqueness of Britain's national parks and other protected landscapes is more apparent to me than ever.
“Places like the Lake District, Snowdonia and the Yorkshire Dales give our mostly urban population the opportunity for challenge, open skies, adventure, excitement, wonder, even a little healthy risk.
“I would go further and say that these places are an essential part of who we are. National Parks are places where we can test ourselves, enjoy life and explore the ecology and culture of these islands. We should take great pride in them.”
Sir Chris gave a BBC radio interview following these comments, and it is a powerful summation of what Mend Our Mountains is all about. Listen to it at 20.47 here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06mqr8n.

Inspirational volunteers
The campaign has also attracted some fantastic grassroots support. Superstar volunteer Richard Duckworth went on the ‘Dirty Dozen’ challenge from Scotland to Sussex to walk all the projects featured in the Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million appeal. In a bold move, he pulled on his boots and set out to walk a total of 120 miles and climb the equivalent height of Everest to raise over £9,000 for the campaign.
Richard said: “I walked on every path that will benefit from MOM – 13 in total – and I can’t encourage you enough to donate to this amazing cause.
“It was a great two weeks exploring our national parks and walking all the primary projects. I’m glad I did it and hopefully some awareness was raised along the way. I’ve spent a long time enjoying and walking in these amazing areas and I feel it’s the people like me, that use them the most, that should give something back. All are very worthy causes and deserving of the funds they receive.”
Meanwhile mountain bikers have also thrown their support behind the Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million appeal to see the ‘Bog of Doom’ on Cut Gate in the Peak District regenerated from being a sticky swamp.
Jason Budd, Cut Gate campaigner, said: “Whether you’re a walker, fell runner, horse rider or mountain biker, show you care for the landscape we call our playground and get on board and in the near future you can be the ones who are at the top of Cut Gate with a sense of pride knowing you’ve done your bit to protect this fragile planet.”
