In July 2010, two times British Paralympic athlete turned international mountaineer Dave Pagden will set out with a group of adventurers and mountaineers in an attempt to break three world records at once.
Having been the first European mountaineer with Cerebral Palsy to take the demanding and tortuous Umbwe route to the Summit of Kilimanjaro in January 2008, Dave has now set his sights on Europe’s highest mountain, Mt Elbrus (18,442ft). The plan is to gain its summit via the 12,000ft remote and long drawn out North face before making a traverse down the other side of the mountain.
If successful Dave will set three records in one climb:
-
1st ever ascent of Mount Elbrus...
-
1st ever ascent of the North face...
-
1st ever traverse of the mountain...
… by a climber with Cerebral Palsy.
Dave is a newly appointed ambassador for RIGHT TO PLAY and plans to raise £100,000 for them with help from colleagues, friends and the business community by attracting sponsorship, and giving presentations after the expedition. 100% of all funds raised before, during and after the expedition will go to RIGHT TO PLAY charity. The expedition is covering all of it’s own costs.
Dave says that having Cerebral Palsy has empowered him, his impairment setting him apart from the conventional and the normal. He also makes it clear that the only difference he perceives between himself and many others is that “his wiring works differently”. For more information about Dave visit his website.
