Skills workshops over the BMC AGM weekend

Get skilled up on a one day course with the BMC over the weekend of the BMC AGM in Buxton.

Three courses will be available on Saturday 30th March aimed at members of BMC affiliated clubs.  The three courses will be

  • Improvised self-rescue skills for climbers (introductory level)
  • Improvised self-rescue skills for climbers (intermediate level)
  • Navigation skills (introductory level)

Each course has a meeting time of 9.30am.
There will be a planned break at 2.30pm for those who wish to leave to attend the 'Clubs - how will they have a say in the future BMC' session at the Lee Wood hotel.
For those who wish to stay outdoors the sessions will continue until 5pm.

Improvised Self-Rescue Skills For Climbers (Introductory Level)

This is a day designed for experienced climbers with no prior knowledge of improvised self rescue skills.  Attendees should be confident with basic rope handling skills, operating a belay plate and abseiling.

9.30am - Meet and travel to local venue for 10am start.

10.00am to 2.30pm - Improvised self-rescue session (skills to include discussion on problem avoidance, equipment for self-rescue, tying off a belay plate, escaping the system with an in reach anchor and escaping the system with an out of reach anchor and ascending a rope).

2.30pm to 5pm - Continuation of session looking at more advanced techniques (lowering a climber and lowering past a knot, assisted and unassisted hoists).

 

Improvised Self-Rescue Skills For Climbers (Intermediate Level)

This is a day designed for experienced climbers with prior knowledge of basic improvised self rescue skills.  Attendees should be confident with tying off a belay plate, escaping a system for inreach and out of reach anchors and ascending a rope.  They should also be confident in rope handling skills, operating a belay plate and abseiling.

9.30am - Meet and travel to local venue for 10am start.

10.00am to 2.30pm - Improvised self-rescue session (skills to include discussion on problem avoidance, equipment for self-rescue and revision of key skills such as tying off a belay plate and escaping the system with an in reach anchor and escaping the system with an out of reach anchor.  Additional skills to be covered include ascending a rope past a knot, abseiling with an injured climber, abseiling past a knot and assisted and unassisted hoists).

2.30pm to 5pm - Continuation of session looking at more advanced scenarios such as assisting climbers in a sea cliff environment where lowering isn’t a possibility and assisting a fallen climber on a traverse). 


Introduction to Navigation

This course is aimed at walkers who are fairly new to the mountain environment.  An experience of basic safety awareness in a mountain environment is needed.

9.30am - Meet and travel to local venue for 10am start.

10.00am to 2.30pm - Navigation skills (skills to include understanding map types and scales and how scales relate to distance, orientating a map, planning an appropriate route for each navigation leg, pacing and timing to measure distance)

2.30 - 5pm (Using a compass to navigate - taking compass bearings on the land and relocating to the map and vice versa, walking on a compass bearing and understanding magnetic deviation.
