Shauna Coxsey: fighting fit and stronger than ever

Posted by Sarah Stirling on 08/04/2016
An ecstatic Shauna Coxsey takes gold in Munich at the 2015 IFSC Bouldering World Cup.

After fighting finger injuries for almost an entire season, Shauna made a very impressive comeback to reach the finals of the 2015 World Cup in Munich. The Runcorn Rocket reveals how she did it, her top tips for making a career out of your passion, and why she's enjoying making shapes on the mat with Leah Crane almost as much as climbing these days.

The highlight of my past year was competing in the finals at the 2015 World Cup in Munich. It still seems surreal. After battling a finger injury for the entire season and then taking almost a month off climbing, I really did not know what to expect going into that competition. Standing on top of that podium with my family in the crowd after flashing all four boulder problems in the final was magical, and a memory I will never forget.

I am a firm believer that you can come out of every experience stronger if you really want to. Like I said, I had a hard time with injuries last year. But that just comes with the territory. There is always something to learn, and always a way to be positive.

Leah Crane and I discovered acro yoga on Instagram a while ago and got totally hooked. It’s so much fun! We’ve made quite a lot of progress and got really psyched to try and do more. It’s been an incredibly interesting learning curve for both of us, and it's definitely an intense bonding experience.

My top tip for someone wanting to make a career out of their passion is: make sure you’re ready to work harder than you think.

I train six days a week. I do a lot of climbing, and also making up silly boulder problems, moves and challenges. I also do lots of different strength and conditioning exercises, and I do a few sessions a week on a Beastmaker. Plus yoga and running.

It has taken me a few years to be able to handle this much training. Thanks to my coach, Mark Glennie, I am now fitter and stronger than ever before.

I am really happy with where I am at right now. Training has gone really well and I can’t wait for the World Cups to start. My goal is to finish every round satisfied with how I’ve climbed. I can’t ask for much more than that.
