Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships 2017

Posted by Rob Adie on 27/04/2017

Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships 2017 is almost upon us! The competition is open to everyone and it’s always draws a strong crowd of climbers from across the UK and Ireland to compete.

How it works

The SYBC is an open event for any young climber, from beginner to British Team Member. It includes age categories from 8yr old to 19yr old. The aim of the SYBC is to identify the Scottish Champions in the different categories.

There is an open Qualifying Round where climbers will have three hours to complete a series of either 20 problems (Category D&E) or 15 problems (Categories Junior, A, B & C) in their own time. They are only allowed to attempt the problems five times each.

For categories C to Junior only, there then follows a Final Round of three problems climbed from isolation, and a possible Super Final if required. Both these will be scored using IFSC rules.

When is it?

The championships are on the 27th May 2017. It is a one-day competition with qualifying rounds in the morning and the finals in the afternoon. The competition will again be held at TCA Glasgow for the sixth year running.

What catergory am I in?

There are six youth catergories which are based on your year of birth:

Junior - 1998 & 1999
Youth A - 2001 & 2000
Youth B - 2003 & 2002
Youth C - 2005 & 2004
Youth D - 2007 & 2006
Youth E - 2009 & 2008

How much does it cost?

The cost to enter the Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships is as follows:

ClimbScotland Gold/Mountaineering Scotland members: £28
Non-members: £38 (this includes a reduced price ClimbScotland Gold Membership!)
Concessions: £16

Concessions: are applicable to climbers whose parents or guardians are on Income Support or Family Credit. Evidence must be provided in support of this.

How to enter the Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships

Book and pay quickly and easily online via the Mountaineering Scotland web portal.

Existing members who are first time users of the portal will need to set up their login via the 'forgotten password' link and follow on-screen instructions. If you have a family membership and are a parent booking on behalf of your child, contact us to set up your child's log-in.

Non-members will need to login to the portal via the 'join us' option, enter their details and follow on-screen instructions, before going straight into the 'book an event' tab. Select the Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships non-member price, which includes a year’s ClimbScotland Gold Mountaineering Scotland membership.

To avoid disappointment, just be aware that even though this is an open competition, if your child wins their category they will NOT be crowned Scottish champion unless they actually are Scottish. (Unlike Welsh or Irish championships) last year several categories had fourth place (or below) "champions" and some very disappointed young people who had travelled a long way.

Why is it that the cost is far greater than the BMC BLCC/BBCC costs and that as BMC member there is no reduced costs, despite a Scottish youth climber getting a reduce cost at English/ Welsh events as a member of climb Scotland?
