The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh hosted a reception on 8 December for some of Britain's greatest explorers, including mountaineers and BMC representatives.

Some of the biggest names in British exploration gathered at Buckingham Palace for the opening of a new exhibition which marks the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott’s ill-fated journey to the South Pole.

The exhibition 'Heart of the Great Alone: Scott, Shackleton and Antarctic Photography' is a collection of remarkable photographs taken in Antarctica by Herbert George Ponting and Frank Hurley.  It will be on show at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, until 15 April 2012. 

The reception at Buckingham Palace recognised the accomplishments of those involved in exploration and adventure.  Between the guests they have travelled the breadth of the oceans, stood on the roof of the world, even looked down on it from space.  Mountaineers in attendence included BMC Patrons Doug Scott and Chris Bonington, Mick Fowler, Stephen Venables, Nick Bullock and Alan Hinkes.

Mumtaz Khan, pictured above at the palace, attended the reception. She has established a new community based walking group in Bradford Yorkshire.  The BMC helped to support her in training to get her Walking Group Leader Award.
