Q1 & 2 financial summary

Posted by Peter Burnside on 13/09/2019

2019 has been another busy year for the BMC with great progress being made in many areas of work including organisational development, governance reform, new access & conservation initiatives and events such as climbing competitions, youth meets and area-based festivals.

A summary of Q1 & 2 income and expenditure is shown in the following pie charts, (with thanks to BMC director Huw Jones for doing the number crunching).

The BMC’s work is wide ranging and highlights from 2019 to date include:

  • The completion of the Mend our Mountains fund raising campaign to support footpath repair projects across the country and the launch of the Hills 2 Oceans campaign to remove plastics from the hills and mountains; organising a major new conference on the hill and mountain environment, ‘Changing Behaviours – caring for the places we love’ to be held in Manchester on 14 November.
  • Area based outdoor festival events in Lancashire (Wilton Fest) and on the Gower; youth meets run by James McHaffie in the Lakes and North Wales with a further meet scheduled for 21 October on Cornish sea cliffs; the National lead climbing and bouldering finals alongside the European Climbing Championships in Ratho in early October.
  • Development of an all-new Strategic Plan which went out to consultation earlier this month; roll-out of new measures to help members engage with BMC activities; development of a new Partners Assembly and updated structures for National Council and club representation within the BMC; the appointment of a full time Governance & Compliance Officer to improve standards, practices and operating procedures across the organisation.

Member subscriptions continue to be by far the BMC’s most important source of income, followed by travel insurance sales and income from government grants and commercial partners. Insurances remain a valued part of the membership package and the BMC continues to work with brokers and underwriters to secure the best possible schemes and rates for members. The BMC is committed to an ongoing programme of improving its work and services and would like to thank all members for their ongoing support.
