Piolet d’Or awarded to Slovenians

Posted by Tina Gardner on 29/01/2007

The 16th Piolet d’Or award has been won by the Slovenian duo Boris Lorencic and Marko Prezelj for their first ascent of the 6,000-foot Northwest Pillar on the 24,000 ft Tibetan Peak Chomo Lhari. This is a second time win for Prezelj, having previously won the inaugural award in 1991.

The Piolet d’Or is awarded by the French magazine Montagnes for what is considered by a jury to be the "best" alpine climb of the year.   Flying the flag for Great Britain was the nomination for Ian Parnell and Tim Emmett's new route on Kedar Dome, India.

You can read more about this year's award on Climbing.com.  The award in general is not without controversy, as Chair of the BMC International Committee points out in an article in The Alpinist.
