The British junior team is on fire. At the recent European Youth Cup (EYC) in L’Argentiere, team captain Nathan Phillips got onto the podium – the first-ever junior Brit to do so in a European Youth Bouldering Event.
Third place was a crucial step up for the 19-year-old from Holmfirth, and for British junior bouldering in general, following Nathan's flying start and first final in round one in Sofia last month.
And that’s not all. Every single member of the team achieved more than they had in any previous European competition Hamish Potokar also made it into the finals in his second-ever outing in Europe; Tara Hayes and Ed Mabon both finished in the top 10; Rachael Carr, Gracie Martin, all topped more qualification problems than before; Sidonie Graham and James Mabon improved their relative placings overall; and Luke Murphy had a great debut.
Nathan said: "I'm well happy with my result! Being part of the new team has really motivated me to train hard".
Tom Greenall, Team Manager said: "Nathan's been working incredibly hard and this is a well deserved podium for him".
Clive Phillips, Assistant Team Manager said: "The team was fantastic. Every single member achieved more than they had in any previous European competition."
This is an exciting year as it's the first time Team GB has fielded a full squad of junior competitors in bouldering. The team has been working hard behind the scenes, and by all accounts it's paying off.
The next EYC bouldering event is in Laval, France on 12-13 October.
