Tintwistle Knarr Quarry

Moorland Gritstone

Large quarry just off the Woodhead Pass road - solid with square-cut holds, 'The Knarr' is Longdendale's answer to Millstone (only not quite as good).

CRoW Information

Open access land, designated under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act (2000) give area access rather than linear access as provided by public rights of way. It also gives a legal right of access specifically for climbing, as well as walking and other quiet recreation on foot.

Please bear in mind however that the landowner still has the right to restrict access for up to 28 days per year (often used on public safety grounds for shooting in moorland areas), and can also apply for longer term restrictions with Natural England (such as bans on dogs, or regular restrictions during particular times of year). It is important to check for these restrictions regularly as they can be added at short notice – all details for open access land in England can be found on Natural England’s website.

Hi fellow outdoor enthusiasts,

Me and a mate went for some bouldering at Tintwistle the other day as we have never been there and it seemed like a place where we would be less likely to meet many people due to its remote nature.

However, on our way up a bloke that was driving down with his 4x4 came out and advised that this is a private land and we are not allowed to climb on the boulders... He mentioned they have had issues with people starting fires and he also found two lads with an air rifle once (this is indeed very bad and these people should be getting solid fines for this!!) and so they are not allowing access to the place anymore.

Also worth mentioning is that the car park at the bottom is closed with some boulders so the closest place to park is Crowden (allow 1.6mi approach to the Tintwistle Knarr carpark and then another 20-30 mins to the boulders).

It'd be good to know if Tintwistle Boulders (and quarry?) are now off the grid for good or is this a temporary ban.

Cheers
