Queens Crag

Northumberland

User attention

Please avoid the crag for the time being - reports have been recevied that there is a currently an access issue relating to parking which we are making inquiries about with the landowner to find out more and hoping to resolve. Please stay away in the meantime to avoid making the situation worse. from 15/09/2020

The crag is situated north of Housesteads and the roman wall. It faces north and the wildness of the moorland setting heightens the feeling of dramatic isolation.

The farm track leads to two parking spots on the north side of the wooded ridge. The first on the left just before the steep descent and the other on the left after the gate.

CRoW Information

Open access land, designated under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act (2000) give area access rather than linear access as provided by public rights of way. It also gives a legal right of access specifically for climbing, as well as walking and other quiet recreation on foot.

Please bear in mind however that the landowner still has the right to restrict access for up to 28 days per year (often used on public safety grounds for shooting in moorland areas), and can also apply for longer term restrictions with Natural England (such as bans on dogs, or regular restrictions during particular times of year). It is important to check for these restrictions regularly as they can be added at short notice – all details for open access land in England can be found on Natural England’s website.

"A reminder that access to Queens Crag via the farm track is now re-established. (Just in time for the fab weather tomorrow!)

Please do not call in at the farmhouse for the time being, the farmer has waived the £2.00 fee for now. This will be resolved once we achieve a greater degree of normality."

Knocked on the house at the entrance road to ask permission today, the farmers did take the £2 fee to climb on the crags.
