The best crag in this area, with a mountain feel. All multi-pitch routes up to 400ft.

Rockfall Warning August 2020 A significant rockfall had occured in 2014, affecting the final pitches of the classic routes Outside Edge and adjacent routes.

A much more recent rockfall in early August 2020, following a torrential thunderstorm has covered the lower pitches of Outside Edge route in a considerable amout of loose rock and debris. 

Update 2022, much of the Classic routes of Outside edge and Ordinary route are still in a dangerous state with large areas of loose rock on the routes and hanging above. Abseiling off the top of the route is not advised as most of the in situe gear at mid way is now not in place. However, routes on the right hand side remain in good condition with little to no debris.

Rockfall Warning August 2020 

A significant rockfall occured in 2014, affecting the final pitches of the clasic roputes Outside Edge. A more recent rockfall in early August 2020, following a torrential thunderstorm has covered the lower pitches of Outside Edge route in a considerable amout of loose rock and debris. Climbing these routes now could be significantly more dangerous than they previously were, with huge loose blocks hanging over the upper parts of the route. The strong advice is to avoid this area and not to climb these routes in their curent state. 

Parking and Approach

From Pen y Groes on the A487, follow signs to Llanllyfni, then towards Tan yr Allt. Ignore the first road on the right (Tal Garnedd). Instead, take the next right up an unmarked road parallel to a stream. Continue to the end of the surfaced road and park through the gate in the field - don't try and drive up the track to the crag. From here, a pleasant path leads gently up towards the two lakes (Llynnau Cwm Silyn). Skirt around these and tackle the scree up to the crag.
Area information

A wide range of cliffs - mainly traditional and multi pitch inc. the popular Llanberis Pass, Idwal Slabs, Clogwyn du'r Arddu and Cwm Silyn cliffs, but also outlying outcrops such as Carreg Alltrem. Many crags are on CROW access land - but not all especially some of the outcrops which lie on private enclosed land. Most of central Snowdonia is both designated an SSSI and also is an European Special Area of Conservation on account of the upland habitat and associated geology and plants found here.

Well worth the slog up the scree. Classic routes on good rock.

Lightning strike at the top of Outside Edge and Original Routes has shattered the top 15m, sending it down the routes. Several car-size blocks are precariously hanging on and will eventually tumble - beware!

Be careful with your parking at the suggested parking place for this crag - unfortunately we didn't complete our climb until late and on returning to the cars found a note warning us against overnight camping/parking (this was not our intention!). Concerningly though, the dust caps had been removed from one of the tyres of each or our cars and some air had been let out!
