Barmouth Quarry

Mid-Wales

A disused stone quarry directly above the coastal town of Barmouth in south Snowdonia. Some 12 routes first climbed in the early 1980ies, with a mix of newly rebolted routes and some older traditional climbing with some loose and vegetated top outs.

Although located on land mapped as open access, climbing on this crag has been historically banned due to concerns about falling rock. Following negotiations between the BMC and the National Trust, access for climbing has now been agreed, subject to a nesting restriction to protect nesting choughs.

Restrictions apply from 1 March - 30 June.

Reason: Nesting Birds

There are both sea birds and protected species nesting at this cliff and a seasonal restriction is in place from March 1st to June 30th.

A very extensive area -extending from the sea-cliffs of Cardigan in the south-west to the mountains of southern Snowdonia (Cadair Idris and Yr Arran massif) to the gritstone outcrops of the Rhinogau, to the old slate quarries of the Dinas Mawddwy and Barmouth areas and as far east as the Berwyn hills.
