Abercastle Area

Pembroke North

The headland with 2 islands west of Abercastle is Ynys Deullyn which has generally poor rock and poor belays. Craig Ddu is the black cliff just outside the bay of Abercastle to the west. This has better rock but a seepage problem down the best route (Beckoning Light, E2) which can be avoided by a slightly harder start on the left. Craig Ddu is NOT restricted in the nesting season. There is also an excellent DWS cave on the west side of the harbour entrance - no restrictions here either.

Crag information
Climbing Area: Wales Rock Type: Shale
Importance: Local CRoW Land: Yes
Ownership: Private No. of Routes: 23
Within National Park: Yes Year Developed: 1973
Grid Reference: SM853336

Ynys Deullyn is half a mile north-west from Abercastle. The rock at Ynys Deullyn is extremely poor and there are no belays in place at the top of routes on the mainland. A thoroughly un-recommended crag!

Restrictions apply from 1 March - 1 August.

Reason: Nesting Birds

The crags at Ynys Deullyn have nesting restrictions 1st March - 1st Aug. The shingle beaches and coves around Ynys Deullyn are also used by seals for pupping August to December - please check before climbing and do not climb if there is a pup on the beach in sight of the climb. Craig Du, nearer to Abercastle is not affected by restrictions, nor is the DWS cave at the entrance to the Harbour.

Parking and Approach

Park carefully at the Harbour if space or roadside in the village - there have been issues with cars/vans blocking access for boat owners in the past.

Group Advice

Area information

Less frequented than the south, there are some very popular cliffs along the southern bays of St David's, but also some very remote and atmospheric cliffs further north. Wildlife is abundant and the abscence of a formal restriction does not mean that protected birds are not present - so climbers are asked to be observant and avoid routes if the prescence of climbers is obviously causing disturbance to the birds. Many of the bays are also important seal breeding areas - if breeding seals are present then again please avoid.
