Running Waters Quarry

Co. Durham

A crag fist climbed during 2008 by Andy Wallace and Andy Blackett, previously ignored, presumably because of the loose nature of the rock and the unclear access rights. The main wall has a lake at the base along most of its length which necessitates starting some of the climbs from abseils or a boat! The rock is almost all loose and looks like sections may collapse if you sneeze too hard while climbing. This abandoned quarry is large, with the main wall area about 100m long and 30m high and the potential for more development in the future.

It can be reached with a 20 minute walk from Shadforth, or quicker from the A181 if you can find anywhere to park. The access rights are unclear, there are no "no trespassing" signs and no gate/barrier to access but there are rumours that a security guard sometimes patrols the quarry.

The quarry is owned by Breedon and is private land so entry to the quarry is trespass Access via the A181 is not permitted as it is a bridal way.
The Bridleway is also accessed by heavy farm machinery
Due to anti social behaviour the base of the crag is like a rubbish tip and the water is dirty with floating rubbish and excrement and has underwater hazards
