Cadshaw Castle Rocks

Lancashire

Situated on the sunny side of a scenic valley, this small natural gritstone outcrop gives a good number of pleasant low grade trad routes and is an ideal place to take beginners.

Crag information
Climbing Area: North West Rock Type: Gritstone
Importance: Regional CRoW Land: No
Ownership: Utilities Company No. of Routes: 42
Within National Park: No Year Developed: 1937
Grid Reference: SD708182

The crag is owned by United Utilities who take a positive attitude to climbing. The rock is a bit polished and can be greeen after rain but dries out quickly.

Sadly (and unbelieveably!) mindless dry tooling (never acceptable on established trad routes) by unknown climbers has damaged some of the flakes on the classic routes.

Parking and Approach

Park on Green Arms Road, very close to the junction with the A666. Walk up the A666 for 50m to a track on the right signposted 'Egerton'. Follow this, forking left after 250m, then on another 250m to the Small Quarry. Continue along the track, round the shoulder of the hill for 400m to the Main Quarry and continue down to the stream, crossing at the stepping stones. A path leads to the outcrop in 100m.

The above parking is limited so if full, park at one or other Entwistle Reservoir car parks further down Greens Arms Road, and walk to the crags via the path by the reservoir, and the track at its head. There is also a small layby on the A666 just past Cadshaw Brook.
