Initiation Slabs

Pembroke North

The Initiation Slabs are typical North Pembroke - surrounded by other craglets and by grass, usually quiet and sublimely idyllic. It's true to say that folk would visit the crag to take a picnic - it's just one of those spots. The routes aren't too bad either! The slabs are solid, offering good climbing and situated in a secluded bay, with one of the prettiest walk-ins known to man. A rock fall has affected the start of 'Cormorant Front'.

Parking and Approach

The best parking spot for the Initiation Slabs is the St Non's Chapel car park. You'll find this by taking the Porth-Clais road down/out of St David's, then look for a sign marked St Non's Chapel 1/4 mile (this road is more like 3/4 mile, but whatever). Follow this road down to a free car park by the St Non's Retreat. Walk down the path (past the ruins) to gain the coastal path at the very rustic St Non's Well. Turn left/east, and follow the path around firstly St Non's Bay, then the gloriously architectural Lunar Bay. The Initiation Slabs are found in the smaller, slotted bay beyond this - about 700m from your car. It is recommended to go to the far side and look back at the crag (from the grassy knoll) for a general scope of the routes. That done, return to the coast path and detour along the ridge/top of the crag itself, where you should see at least three abseil stakes in place.

Area information

Less frequented than the south, there are some very popular cliffs along the southern bays of St David's, but also some very remote and atmospheric cliffs further north. Wildlife is abundant and the abscence of a formal restriction does not mean that protected birds are not present - so climbers are asked to be observant and avoid routes if the prescence of climbers is obviously causing disturbance to the birds. Many of the bays are also important seal breeding areas - if breeding seals are present then again please avoid.
