Down Tor

Dartmoor

A spread out series of boulders dot the hillside of Down Tor, conveniently located west of the popular Norsworthy Bridge parking at the far end of Burrator reservoir. Normally combined with a trip to Cuckoo Rock / Combeshead Tor. This is rapidly becoming a very worthwhile venue for the low to mid grade boulderer - of which there isn't that much on the moor.See annotated photos for locations and photo topos.

Parking and Approach

Park at Norsworthy Bridge at the far end of Burrator reservoir and follow the obvious path eastwards, initially across grassy fields, to climb up to the Tor proper. The first trio of boulders somewhat south /right of the path make up the Corkscrew area. (Apparently this is Snappers Tor - unnamed on the OS map) Further on towards Down Tor is a lumplet found adjacent to the path at 574693 containing 'Minuscule sausage' etc.(Apparently this is Middleworth Tor - again not on the OS map). About 200m further west from here and to the right of the path is the distinctive
Area information

Part of the Dartmoor National Park is used by the MoD for training and live-firing exercises. It also offers a wealth of excellent hillwalking and numerous Tors, some of which still have the potential for new climbing development – especially wild bouldering. The Defence Estates endeavour to support public access (without compromising public safety and military training) and have produced a website with the important safety info and firing times. Follow this link http://www.dartmoor-ranges.co.uk/ for the Dartmoor training area homepage and links to detailed info.
