Crowden Great Quarry

Northern Gritstone

User attention

Significant rockfall has been reported in The Circus area, meaning Zugzwang (E5) has fallen down as in all likelihood has Old Spice (VS) next to it. What remains appears unstable so it is worth avoiding this area of the quarry. from 04/04/2021

Large, impressive quarry with routes up to 30m long. Usually dry rock needs care in places. Best routes are The Shabby Tiger (HVS 5a,5a), Take My Breath Away (E2 5c, 4b), Fatal Attraction (E3 5c) and Perestroika (E4 6a). Recent additions including some new bouldering said to be very good.

Parking and Approach

Park at the public car park near Crowden YHA.

Please note the Over the Moors guide mentions an alternative parking location accessed from the turning circle by St James' Chapel. This is no longer accessible due to a new locked gate having been installed. Attempting to access this spot will instead result in having to make a dangerous reverse manoeuvre back out of the track!

CRoW Information

Open access land, designated under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act (2000) give area access rather than linear access as provided by public rights of way. It also gives a legal right of access specifically for climbing, as well as walking and other quiet recreation on foot.

Please bear in mind however that the landowner still has the right to restrict access for up to 28 days per year (often used on public safety grounds for shooting in moorland areas), and can also apply for longer term restrictions with Natural England (such as bans on dogs, or regular restrictions during particular times of year). It is important to check for these restrictions regularly as they can be added at short notice – all details for open access land in England can be found on Natural England’s website.
