Winewall Quarry

Lancashire

Winewall lies just off the B6250 between Colne and Trawden. There are two quarries at the top of the hill at the end of the village and the climbs described (in the Lancashire Rock supplement) are all on the west side of the road.

2022: a number of older traditionally protected routes have been retro bolted and there is discussion at NW area level to remove these. The routes in question have all been reascended by leaders (at that level) for checking and the retro bolts were not deemed essential.

Jackdaws nest on the crag. Although the BMC doesn't restrict climbing for these prolific birds who are very resilient to potential disturbance, it would be best ot avoid the crag whilst they are nesting to avoid attracting negative attention from local residents.

Parking and Approach

There is a small parking space by a gate and the village sign on the right after the last buildings. Follow a path behind the gate heading towards the far side of the quarry (resist the temptation to go directly down the banking – there is much hidden glass). Keep left at a large twin stemmed tree, then continue to The Vineyard.
