Avon Gorge (Sea Walls)

Avon and Somerset

An amphitheatre of quarried limestone which offers single and multi-pitch climbing across a range of grades, but notably featuring a number of easier routes. This can often make it more popular than other areas in the gorge.

Crag information
Climbing Area: South West & Southern Rock Type: Limestone
Importance: National CRoW Land: No
Ownership: Private No. of Routes: 100

Protection tends to be sparse, but the crag is a real sun trap allowing for year-round climbing, although it can get very hot in mid summer. Mainly multi-pitch routes up to about 90 metres. In the summer, escape up to the Downs and the waiting ice cream van.

Parking and Approach

A combination padlock has been placed on the gate above Sea Walls to allow climbers to use the gate but not the general public. This mostly affects routes from Featherless Biped to Nightcap and the code for the lock is: 11966.

A car park with a limited number of spaces is located directly under Sea Walls. Alternatively park above the Gorge on Clifton Down and walk diwn via one of the paths.

Cycle hoops have recently been installed at Sea Walls for anyone wanting to approach by bike.

Group Advice

Popular with groups - particularly the single pitch routes directly above gravel areas behind the car park.
