As the new BMC Cheshire and Merseyside Sandstone guide makes its way into the world, a veritable legion of legends gathered in a Runcorn pub to wet its head and shed a tear over old times.
Guidebook launches such as these are great events and a chance for the climbers who worked so hard on the book to get together and celebrate. But they are much more than that. They serve as a focus for generations of activists and enthusiasts to come out of the woodwork and meet up again, sometimes for the first time in many years.
Local legends such as Martin Boysen and Derek Walker, hardcore heroes such as Joe Healey and Phil Davidson, current crushers such as Mike Adams and Ben Farley and future female world champion boulderers such as Shauna Coxsey. All were there and multitudes more besides.
Captain of the guidebook ship, Mark Hounslea, made a thankfully short thank you speech to the team – Al, Andy, Ben, Chris, Duncan, Mike and Paul – before a tear welled up in his hardened Liverpudlian eye, and the drinking went on.
Big congratulations to the team. A great night. Night night.
We want to say a big thanks to every BMC member who continues to support us through the Coronavirus crisis.
From weekly Facebook Lives and GB Climbing home training videos, to our access team working to re-open the crags and fight for your mountain access, we couldn’t do it without you.
Did you know that we've launched a U27 membership offer for just £1.50 / month? And with full membership from £2.50 / month, it's never been easier to join and support our work:
