Round 1 – Redhill - Following the success of the in-augural series of the HSBC in early 2010, a few changes were made to the format for 2011.
We spread the championship over the whole winter season rather than just the early spring and to split the championship into 2 separate competitions – the open competition tackles problems from V3 upwards and carries a prize fund of £4,000 – the 4fun competition has problems ranging from V0 to V4 with stacks of gear prizes to be won!
Sunday 31st October saw a grey day dawn at High Sports Redhill, we were expecting a good turnout due to all of the people who had pre-registered via the website, we weren’t disappointed. The 4fun competition went first with 70 people competing across three categories; male, female and junior. The competition went well with plenty of good climbing on show and plenty for those looking for inspiration to draw from. The 4fun competition drew to a close in the late morning and after a short break for prize giving, the main open competition kicked off.
The turnout was good for the open comp with some really excellent climbing from those at the sharp end, brought even more into focus by the top-class and imaginative route setting of Mike Langley. The competition ran for 2 ½ hours before a short break to tally the scores. The final was contested by the top 3 males and females, however in a twist, 3rd place was tied in both categories putting a total of 8 people through to the final. The head to head was against the clock and we saw some excellent quick-fire climbing!
So a big thank you to everyone who came along, we look forward to seeing you again at High Sports West 1 on 21st November, a massive thank you to Metolius who were our sponsor for the day, and if you weren’t there, we hope to see you at West 1.
I’ll leave you with one question, where were the females? Out of a field of 110 only 15 females entered across both categories! So come on all female climbers, aspiring and professional, there’s a shot at some big prizes here!
Registration is also still open for members of the British Bouldering Team. We are offering two wild cards straight into the Super Final with a shot at the £1,000.00 top prize. The cards will be drawn at random from those registered. To register email chris.evans@high-sports.co.uk
