We’ve a whole host of heroes representing us at the final IFSC Boulder World Cup of the 2017 season. While BMC ambassador Shauna Coxsey already has enough points to defend her title of IFSC Boulder World Cup Champion, with the majority of the team there we can’t wait to see how they all do! Munich has become a staple of the season and with the incredible, roaring crowd creating an electrifying atmosphere, it’s a firm favourite with athletes and fans alike. This year, for the seventh and final round of the IFSC Boulder World Cup 2017 season, nearly 300 athletes from 47 countries will converge on the famous Olympiapark to test their mettle once again.
BMC ambassador Shauna Coxsey already secured the season title by winning her 11th career gold and fourth of the season in Mumbai, India.
In the men’s, Jongwon Chon of Korea leads ahead of Alexey Rubtsov and Keita Watabe with three wins, and only a catastrophic score could scupper his chances of winning the overall title this year. With all to play for, they’re bound to put on a show.
The GB Climbing Team has a squad of 13 athletes competing at Munich, the biggest team we’ve had at any event this year and possibly ever.

Qualifiers start on Friday 18 August and Semi-Finals and Finals will be held on Saturday 19 August with livestreams available to watch for free.

European Championships
At the same time as the final round of the IFSC Boulder World Cup, the event will be ‘doubled up; as a European Championship event. Initial controversy surrounding the potential unfairness in the original format has been sorted out by changes made following discussions between the Athletes’ Commission and the IFSC.
The potential unfairness lay in the possibility that no European athletes would qualify for semi-finals. While it’s an incredibly unlikely scenario, if it did happen there would be no way to rank competitors in the two different qualifying groups, as both groups would have climbed on completely different boulders, making their overall rankings arbitrary.
The solution is to allow the top 10 European athletes from each qualifying group, including those that didn’t qualify for Semis (not in the top 20) to compete in Semi-Finals, with those that didn’t actually qualify climbing immediately after the regular World Cup round. This will then decide the results of the European Championships for Bouldering and an awards ceremony will be carried out before the IFSC Boulder World Cup Final.
Once again, the IFSC has showed willing to listen to its athletes and fans, which can only lead to better events and competitions.
