Amid tentative efforts to exploit Afghanistan’s potential as a tourist destination an Italian organisation is helping to train former mujahideen fighters as mountain guides.
It is hoped that the country’s Hindu Kush mountains, which have kept out would-be invaders for centuries, can now attract trekkers, climbers and other visitors. With some of the highest mountains in the world and many of them unclimbed Afghanistan still has untapped mountaineering potential, held back by three decades of war.
