About the BMC and Competitions
A good way is to enter local competitions at your local climbing wall.  The BMC Leading Ladder is less formal than some competitions and suits people with a wide range of experience.  Also, for young people, there is the BMC Youth Climbing Series that is for both beginner and more experienced climbers.  The BMC also run a number of national competitions.
These vary depending on the type of competition and the category.  For instance, the BMC Leading Ladder starts at F6b.  However, in the finals of championship competitions you can expect the routes in the finals to approach F8a.
These vary depending on the type of competition and the category.  In the BMC Youth Climbing Series that is a fun competition some of the problems can be fairly reasonable.  However, in the finals or national championships the problems will be very difficult indeed.
There is a range of competitions that children and young people can enter. See here.
For young people there is the BMC Youth Climbing Series that has a national final.  For those into bouldering there is the British Bouldering Championships (BBCs).  For those with an interest in lead climbing there is the British Lead Climbing Championships (BLCCs)
