Harriet Tuckey’s book about her father Griffith Pugh’s vital but little-known contribution to the first ascent of Everest has won a major sports book award, and now has a chance of being voted the British Sports Book of the Year – your vote could swing it.

At the British Sports Book Awards ceremony, held at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on 21 May, Everest – The First Ascent picked up the Outstanding Sport Writing Award. Mountaineering has a rich literary heritage, but this is the first time that a mountaineering book has won one of the British Sports Book Awards, which are now in their 12th year.

The award has put the book on the shortlist – along with seven other award category winners – for the Times Sports Book of the Year Award, which is determined not by judges, but by public vote. So if you enjoyed the book, or even if you just want to support the idea of a book about British high altitude mountaineering winning a prestigious award, get your vote in.

In 2013, Everest – The First Ascent won the Boardman Tasker Prize for mountain literature, as well as the Mountain and Wilderness Literature (Non-Fiction) Prize at the Banff Mountain Festival Book Competition.
