Euro Champs on Eurosport across Europe LIVE

Posted by Peter Burnside on 04/10/2019

This weekend the IFSC European Climbing Championships 2019 will be held in Edinburgh where hundreds of elite athletes will gather to win the titles in the pump-fest of the Lead event, and the blisteringly fast Speed event. And what’s more, the BMC has managed to arrange to have the whole event streamed live on Eurosport. Get all the info here:

Edinburgh will be attracting Europe’s best to battle it out at the European Climbing Championships this weekend and a number of GB Climbing athletes will be looking to hit those buzzers and end up on top. With the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games just around the corner, our young guns will be looking to hone their skills and rack up more experience under the spotlights on the international stage, but this time in front of a home crowd.

If you’re in the area, come cheer our rising GB Climbing stars in person at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA): Ratho. But if you can’t make it in person, you can still watch every pounce to a hold, every slamming of the speed event buzzer, and all the action LIVE either on Eurosport, the BMC TV YouTube channel or the BMC Facebook page, or use the embedded videos at the bottom of this article.

Big thanks to our official supporting sponsor Clif Bar for helping organise the European Climbing Championships 2019 and another flagship event, the La Sportiva BMC British Bouldering Championships, in the UK this year. The British competition climbing scene is very exciting right now, and our new partnership with Clif Bar is helping us deliver the events and results that our athletes and supporters expect.

Wolfgang Wabel, IFSC European Council President, said: “Edinburgh put on a fantastic show of climbing and paraclimbing in 2017, and we are confident the organising team will continue the proud legacy at the IFSC European Championships for Lead and Speed in 2019.”

Zoe Spriggins, BMC Competitions Programme Manager, said: “The British Mountaineering Council is proud to be able to assist Edinburgh in hosting this event. It will not only be a highly exciting competition in its own right, but is also the last chance to see our GB athletes competing on home soil ahead of Tokyo 2020.”

Why watch the European Climbing Championships?

GB Climbing athletes have already been competing on the IFSC World Cup circuit around the globe and seeing some incredible results. Now, with the competition coming to the UK, they’ll be energised to give it their all and put on a show for all the local fans watching and cheering them on.

Will Bosi will literally be on home soil, back in his old stomping grounds where he became the well-rounded climbing machine that he is today. After making two finals already this year, he’s looking in top form coming into the European Climbing Championships and as the holder of the current British Speed Record for Men, we can’t wait to see him compete in the Speed event.

Pre-injury, Molly Thompson-Smith only just missed out on making the final of the previous World Cup held in Edinburgh back in 2017. After returning to form and the international stage, Molly easily made semi-finals in the World Cup in Kranj, Slovenia, last weekend and will be looking to ramp it and claim on a finals spot in Edinburgh this weekend.

Up-and-coming Hamish McArthur just scored his best senior international result last weekend at the Lead World Cup where he placed 19th – can he do better in Edinburgh? And this was off the back of an incredible season competing in the Youth A category at a number of big international comps for young athletes including the Youth World Championships 2019 where Hamish won the silver medal in bouldering and placed 5th in the Lead event!

Jim Pope has also been seeing some serious results and made the semi-finals of the World Cup last weekend in Kranj where he placed 23rd overall. With a number of international competitions under his belt and the cool head of an experienced grit trad head, there’s no doubt Jim will be calm and relaxed under pressure.

Hot off the success of winning the silver medal at the British Lead Climbing Championships 2019 and having made a number of the international competitions this year, Jo Neame is pumped to climb hard and try her best in Edinburgh in front of the home crowd.
