Shauna Coxsey capped an excellent weekend for the GB Bouldering Team in the Austrian resort of Innsbruck, continuing her brilliant run with another second place in the fourth round of the IFSC World Cup. She narrowly missed out to the experienced local Anna Stöhr having led for most of the final.

Held under a canopy in the spectacular outdoor arena in the Olympic park, the competition started well for the GB Team, with three climbers qualifying for the semi-finals. Stewart Watson and Ned Feehally then qualified third and sixth in the men’s semi-final with Shauna Coxsey fourth in the women’s semis.

All the men failed on the first two problems in the men’s final, and only two – Austria’s Kilian Fischhuber and the Russian star Rustam Gelmanov – completed any of the remaining, with Fischhuber outscoring the current world champion two to one. The rest of the men were split by bonus points with Ned finishing valiantly in fifth and Stewart sixth.

The female final was absolutely electric and went right down to the final problem in a duel between Anna Stöhr and our own Shauna Coxsey.

Shauna led right though the final flashing problems one and two, and only a mistake on problem three allowed Anna to draw level, meaning she would win due to her qualifying position coming into the final.

It all came down to the final problem, a large dyno to two large volumes and then a huge rock-over to victory. Shauna dropped her first attempt but topped her fourth bloc of the final on the second attempt. Anna had two attempts on the bloc to beat Shauna and her experience shone through as she flashed the problem first go to give her a well-deserved victory.

Another second place for Shauna means her outstanding run of results this year contunes. She is currently third in the IFSC World Cup rankings, which is great news for GB Bouldering. Finger’s crossed Shauna can make that final step to the top of the podium in Vail, USA in two weeks’ time
