Climb outside with Sheffield's Castle MC

Castle club members out on the grit.

The Castle Mountaineering Club are holding two open rock climbing weekends in April 2015, providing the opportunity to find out more about the Club and meet some of its members. The weekends are primarily aimed at those who wish to move from indoor to outdoor climbing in the Peak District.

Have you spent all winter down at the wall and want to move outdoors? Are you an experienced climber looking for a climbing partner? Do you want to find out more about what rock climbing involves?

These weekends provide the opportunity to meet fellow climbers of a range of abilities and ages, first at the climbing wall and then outdoors. We plan to meet at Awesome Walls, Sheffield on Friday 17 April from 6pm and then at Birchen Edge on Sunday 19 April from 10.30am. The following weekend we plan to meet at Awesome Walls, Sheffield on Friday 24th April and climb at Stanage Edge on Sunday 26 April starting at the same times. However, it might be raining, meaning a change of outdoor venue, so it is important to contact us in advance (see below).

President David Pendlebury said:  "It is often daunting to move from the security of that red route you can do to placing your own gear and working out where a route goes. Joining up with our club members, who have been there before and often have many years experience, can ease this move. Our members are able to offer informal advice, mentoring and climbing partners while Club membership provides access to BMC training courses."

Ideally you will have climbed indoors, have your own harness, belay device and shoes and can tie on safely and belay someone competently. However, the club has some equipment which willl be available on both weekends. If in doubt, please speak to one of the contacts below.

Castle Mountaineering Club members undertake a wide range of activities including rock climbing, walking, trekking, backpacking, ski mountaineering, ski touring and mountain biking. We are a sociable and supportive group with a lot of combined experience. What unites us is our love of the outdoors, whether it's the great countryside on our doorstep in the Peak District or adventures further afield.

Andrew Milne,  Membership Secretary can be contacted on 0114 2686605 and David Pendlebury, President on 0114 2219460 or via www.castlemountaineering.com

Is your club running a similar event this year? Contact the BMC's RDO team to get it publicised on our website, Facebook and twitter.
