Celebrate Earth Day with The Climate Project

Posted by Alex Messenger on 22/04/2021

Earth Day 2021 is here, with its theme of restoration. We couldn’t think of a better time to launch our new trailer for The Climate Project, and to take a minute to celebrate how much you’ve helped us raise so far to combat the climate crisis through restoring Peak moorlands.

Last year, we teamed up with Moors for the Future for an exciting new long-term BMC  initiative: The Climate Project.

Out on our wild moorlands grows an amazing plant called sphagnum. When sphagnum is growing healthily, this little plant powerhouse takes as much carbon out of the atmosphere as a tropical rainforest.

Peat moorlands cover 15% of the UK, but many have been dug up, drained or destroyed. The Peak District moorland landscape is now the most degraded in Europe and this damaged peat can be a great carbon emitter.

Moors for the Future was founded in 2003 to fight back. So far, they’ve transformed over nearly 8,000 acres of peat moors across the Peak District and South Pennines. The Climate Project directly supports the work of Moors for the Future, giving you a simple way to help.

You will make a real difference, as healthy moorland will:

• Actively fight the climate crisis
• Reduce wildfire risk
• Reduce flooding risk
• Protect endangered wildlife

The Climate Project is integrated across the BMC. You can support it through gift-aid donations, adding it to your membership fee, buying the Montane X BMC clothing range or shopping for a square metre of (virtual) sphagnum in the BMC shop.

Thanks to you, Montane, Cotswold Outdoor and Snow + Rock, we’ve raised over £30,000 for Moors For the Future so far.

To celebrate the launch of The Climate Project, we created a cinematic trailer for film festivals in 2020 but.... Covid. Now, we’re launching it online to celebrate Earth Day. Stay tuned for three in-depth feature shorts on the people involved in this vital moorland work: the scientists, volunteers and firefighters.
