Kersey Green Scar

Yorkshire Gritstone

A secluded limestone crag in a pleasant Swaledale location. The outcrop is broken, loose and overgrown in places and only those with an adventurous spirit should consider a visit.

Crag information
Climbing Area: North East Rock Type: Limestone
Importance: Local CRoW Land: No
Ownership: Estate No. of Routes: 18
Within National Park: No Year Developed:
Grid Reference: NGR 083044

The crag is similar to others in the vicinity with suspect and loose rock requiring caution. There are numerous corners and small faces which together with broken ground at the base makes navigation and identification of recorded lines difficult.

Parking and Approach

One approach is to park by the hairpin bend on the minor road (NGR 080055) and follow Rake Beck downstream for approximately 1km. The going is rough in places and much beck hopping is necessary to find the easiest line. Some of this approach is on Open Access Land although the crag itself is not. Reports state the farmer does not object to climbing as long as it is with consideration eg  no noise, litter, large groups and definitely no dogs.

CRoW Information

Some of the approach on the west side of Rake Beck is on Open Access Land but the crag itself is not. The east side of the beck includes MOD ranges and a conservation area with instructions to keep off.

Group Advice

The crag is not suitable for group use.
