A huge number of young competitors took part in the 2014 grand final of the BMC Youth Climbing Series, held at the massively impressive Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, Ratho on 28 June.

The BMC Youth Climbing Series is always a busy event, and this year was no exception.

Finalists qualified through the regional rounds held in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in spring. Over 870 young people took part in total - the most popular year yet.

Virtually all those invited took up their invitation to take part in the final, so the turn out on the day was impressive - 301 young competitors!

Additionally, most competitors were accompanied by two or three supporters - some even more - so you can imagine the vast space required to accommodate that number of people.

Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho Arena buzzing and the whole day was absolutely fantastic with competitors and parents having a great day and those competing giving of their very best.

To add to the atmosphere, members of the GB Junior Team were helping out by demonstrating the routes. The GB Team are role models to our young climbers in the Youth Climbing Series and competitors were excited to see their heroes: Molly Thompson-Smith, William Bosi, Jim Pope, Angus Davidson, Emily Allen, Ellissa Bryant, Aiden Dunne, Rory Cargill, Catrin Rose, Rebecca Kinghorn, Cameron McLaughin.

The standard of climbing in the series continues to rise each year and this year was no exception with some amazing individual performances. In order to split the competitors there were super-finals in male D and female C categories.

Competitors from The London & South East Area amassed the most points, as a group, so they took the team prize.

Everyone went away wanting to improve their climbing and already looking forward to next year's series.

What a great day!

BMC thanks supporters

The BMC would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of the event. This includes the vast number of enthusiatic and dedicated volunteers who do such a fantastic job.  They judge, chaperone, belay, demonstrate routes, score the event, register competitors, allocate T-shirts, warm up competitors, run errands, and so on, the list is virtually endless. The event really couldn't take place without their outstanding and unstinting support. And, also, let's not forget the young people themselves and all their numerous supporters!

Happy volunteers. Thanks to all for their unstinting support.

Thanks also go to all the professionals who work at the event. This includes the staff at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena: Ratho for making us feel so welcome, the route-setters for great routes, the BMC and MCofS staff both present at the event and those in the office who work behind the scenes.

Finally, thanks also go to the various sponsors of the event: Entreprises, Mammut, DMM; and the organisers: the BMC, BMC Cymru / Wales; MC of S and MI.

See you next year!

Hi,

Just to say a big thank you to the BMC for the excellent event at Ratho on Saturday.
The amount of effort that goes in to organising an event on that scale is very much appreciated.
Particularly I’d like to thank the BMC for not just delivering an efficient competition but for their commitment to the wellbeing of the kids and to fostering the fun and supportive atmosphere in which the competitions take place. Compared to other youth sports, I think you’re doing really well on this. Keep up the good work.

Best,

Martin
