BMC Youth Climbing Series final 2013

Warming up

A huge number of young competitors took part in the 2013 grand final of the BMC Youth Climbing Series, held at the massively impressive Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, Ratho on June 15.

The BMC Youth Climbing Series is always a busy event, and this year was no exception.

Finalists qualified through the regional rounds held in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in spring. Over 860 young people took part in total - the most popular year yet.

Virtually all those invited took up their invitation to take part in the final, so the turn out on the day was impressive - 306 young competitors!.

Additionally, most competitors were accompanied by two or three supporters - some even more - so you can imagine the vast space required to accommodate that number of people.

Consequently, Ratho Arena was buzzing and the whole day was absolutely fantastic with competitors and parents having a great day and those competing giving of their very best.

The standards of climbing in the series continues to rise each year and this year was no exception with some amazing individual performances.

Competitors from The London & South East Area amassed the most points, as a group, so they took the team prize.

Everyone went away wanting to improve their climbing and already looking forward to next year's series.

BMC thanks supporters
The BMC would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of the event. This includes the vast number of enthusiatic and dedicated volunteers who do such a fantastic job.  They judge, chaperone, belay, score the event, register competitors, allocate T-shirts, warm up competitors, run errands, and so on, the list is virtually endless. The event really couldn't take place without their outstanding and unstinting support. And, also, let's not forget the young people themselves and all their numerous supporters!

Thanks also go to all the professionals who work at the event. This includes the staff at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena: Ratho for making us feel so welcome, the route-setters for great routes, the BMC and MCofS staff both present at the event and those in the office who work behind the scenes.

Finally, thanks also go to the various sponsors of the event: Entreprises, Mammut, DMM; and the organisers: the BMC, BMC Cymru / Wales; MC of S and MI.

See you next year!

Hello all at the BMC,
We are planning to come to Ratho for the YCS final 2014. Two of our children will be competitions. We will be travelling from Cork, in the south of Ireland. We will be flying up and back on the same day. In your opinion and from your experience what time do you think the competition will finish up at. I ask this only to allow me plan and book flights.

Thanks for the help and here is to the competition.
