Go bouldering outdoors with professional climbing coach & BMC area youth coordinator Jon Redshaw this September. Learn how to transfer your indoor skills safely to outdoor bouldering in the UK’s premier bouldering destination.

These day long workshop allows young climbers the opportunity to start their bouldering outside.  With an experienced coach showing you how to transfer your skills to the rock and understand the safety considerations when climbing outside. Open to all young climbers between the ages of 10 and 17. No previous experience of rock climbing is required.

Parental Supervision

Participants are required to remain under the supervision of a parent or guardian over the age of 18. The supervisor must be willing and able to approach the boulders with the group which may involve uneven and steep ground.

What do you need to bring?

  • Climbing shoes (can be supplied if you require them)
  • Helmet (can be supplied if you require it)
  • Lunch and warm clothing
  • Suncream!

The Outside cafe, Hathersage, S32 1BB. See map

Time: 10.00 am

Cost

£20 for the day.

There are a small number of subsidised places available for families who are in rented accomodation and have a household income of less than £17,000. These can be applied for by emailing James McHaffie at the BMC: james@thebmc.co.uk.

What do the courses cover? 

The courses are designed to teach you everything that you need to know to safely bouldering outside, including:

  • Venues and guidebooks
  • Using bouldering pads
  • Spotting
  • Movement techniques

The eight-year-old and the Old Man of Hoy

In June, Edward Mills became the youngest person to climb the Old Man of Hoy, a climb which, to date, has raised over £30,000 for Climbers Against Cancer. It's a cause close to Edward's heart: his Mum, Bekki had breast cancer. Bekki watched Edward reach the summit from a ferry, but sadly died before he went to London with his Dad and brother George to meet the Prime Minister and receive a Pride of Britain award on 6 November 2018. Sarah Stirling asked Edward and his Dad a few questions.
