The BMC has a growing, and important, presence on the influencial social media website called Twitter.
In a very short space of time we now have thousands of followers on Twitter and are using it as another outlet to disseminate information and promote the interests of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a website with more than 100 million users world wide. A growing number of BMC members are also using Twitter to get information from sources they are interested in very quickly.
Twitter enables very short messages, up to a maximum of 140 characters, called tweets, to be displayed on a user's profile page.
Many tweets also contain links to a related webpage where more details or further information can be read about the content of the tweet simply by clicking on the link. This is mainly how the BMC uses Twitter, especially to post updates and link to new news items on the BMC website.
Many people have quickly realized that Twitter actually enables them to follow just the people and organisations that they are interested in. Additionally, they can very quickly scan their tweets and decide whether they want to find out more from that source, or not.
Some people follow hundreds of users and have developed ways of scanning tweets very quickly for what interests them, or for precisely what they are looking for.
